Lately my life has been full of adventures. For example, I was able to partake on the yearly vacation with my mom and grandma this past week. And where did we happen to go? New Orleans! It was a city full of culture, diversity, and best of all FOOD. Utterly delicious food. I learned the differences between the types of cuisines and roamed the city each day to check out the variety of restaurants. Shrimp creole, chicken gumbo, BBQ shrimp, banana's foster, beignets, alligator, pralines, jambalaya, turtle soup.... mmm.....
*Side note: I'll have to admit the "Horny Gator" was my favorite drink on Bourbon, it even came with a little plastic alligator to take home :)
So what is the difference between cajun and creole? Turns out that creole uses tomatoes, while cajun does not. However, the base of both dishes are very similar. They include the "holy trinity" as some may say- onion, bell pepper, celery, and garlic. The spices in both dishes are very similar and additional ingredients can be added or substituted as well. I might've had to pick up some "Slap Yo Momma" cajun spice for myself before I left.... hmmm a Cajun/Creole recipe might be posted soon....
